The Futhark Alphabet, which is essentially a set of glyphs representing sounds and ideas, is
derived from the Hieroglyphs of the remote Ancient Egyptians. The term "Hieroglyph" was
coined by the Ancient Greeks to describe the "Sacred Writings" of the Ancient Egyptians.
Hieroglyphs of Ancient Egypt, which represented sounds and ideas, were considered
"Sacred" not only in the religious sense, but also because they conveyed a "Secret Meaning".

Similarly the glyphs of the earliest Teutonic Futhark Alphabet, conveyed a "Secret Meaning".
This is revealed in the term used to describe them ... "Runes".

The word "Rune" is derived from "Run" (pronounced roon), an Anglo-Saxon word meaning
"Secret" or "Mystery".

Also, perhaps not surprisingly, the Latin word "Runa" translates as "Dart", which is
descriptive of the Rune writing style, adapted from the Greek, to suit carving.

The Runes are referred to as the Futhark Alphabet because
f-u-th-a-r-k are considered to be the first six glyphs of that alphabet. Interestingly however,
these first six glyphs are also translated as f-ur-th-o-r-c.

Step 1 in deciphering the Secret Meaning of the Futhark Runes
The Futhark Alphabet
The "Runic" Alphabet and the "Futhark" Alphabet are one and the same. The
difference in terminology is due to dissimilar interpretations of the writing system.

Inherent in the "Runic" Alphabet are "Secret Meanings" ... the word "Rune" being
derived from "Run" (pronounced roon), an Anglo-Saxon word meaning
"Secret" or "Mystery".

In contrast, the "Futhark" Alphabet is merely a means of conveying
letters and sounds.

appear to revolve. The "Cross" which is formed by the four quarters of the circle takes 25,920
years to complete one revolution. The completion of one revolution is referred to as a Great
Year.

The first of the Sacred Meanings encoded into the Futhark Alphabet is that of the Precession
of the Equinoxes.

Within this Great Year are four Seasons, which are defined by the Spring, Summer, Autumn
and Winter Equinoxes. For this reason the
Great Year is also referred to as the Precession of
the Equinoxes.

Today we live in an Age of Science in which Precession is regarded as just another
phenomenon. No great deal is attached to it. However in the remote ancient past only the
intellectual elite would have been allowed to be initiated into, and share, a secret of such
magnitude ...
the Secret of Precession.
We have just taken the third step
in deciphering the Runic or secret meaning
of the Futhark Alphabet.
Note: The sacredness of the number twelve was not only incorporated into Time and Astronomy, but also into
Measurement: twelve inches in one foot, Finance: twelve pence in one shilling, and Religion: the Twelve Tribes
of Israel, the Twelve Disciples and the Twelve Days of Christmas. This throws the meaning of Christianity into a
whole new light!

Step 4  in deciphering the Secret Meaning of the Futhark Runes
The Futhark Alphabet and the Constellations
The "Runic" Alphabet and the "Futhark" Alphabet are one and the same. The difference in
terminology is due to dissimilar interpretations of the writing system.

Inherent in the
"Runic" Alphabet are "Secret Meanings" ... the word "Rune" being derived from
"Run" (pronounced roon), an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "Secret" or "Mystery".

In contrast, the
"Futhark" Alphabet is merely a means of conveying letters and sounds.
Here are the names given to the
symbols of the Runic Alphabet
Third Aett
begins with
Wunjo, the
Standard of the
Gods
First Aett begins
with Othala/Odin,
the Father of
the Gods.

Second Aett
begins with
Sowilo, the Sun
The Futhark Alphabet is named after its apparent first six letters F U Th A R K

There are 24 glyphs in the Futhark Alphabet, which  are equally divided into three sets of eight.
Each set is called an "Aett".
Significantly "Aett" is pronounced "Eight".

The names of the three Aetts are:

Frey's Aett, Hagall's Aett and Tyr's Aett.

These are determined by the first letter at the left-hand side of each row ... F H T

Clearly Hagall is the Second Aett but which is the First Aett? Based on our own experience of
writing from left to right and from top to bottom, there is a tendency to assume that Frey's Aett
is the First Aett. However, taking into account the Runic secret meaning of the alphabet, I
would suggest that the "letters" are meant to be read from right to left and from bottom to top.
This would mean that Tyr's Aett is the First Aett, Hagall's Aett is the Second Aett and Frey's
Aett is the Third Aett.

Applying this reasoning the First Aett begins with the word "Odin", the father of the gods.
A much more logical choice than Futhark.
The
Second Aett begins with Sowilo, the Sun.
The
Third Aett begins with Wunjo, the Standard of the gods.
We have just taken the first step in
deciphering the Runic or secret meaning
of the Futhark Alphabet.

The sounds represented by the Futhark Alphabet are direct descendents
of the Hieroglyphs of the Ancient Egyptians.
The following chart, which I constructed after lots of time-consuming research, interprets the
progressive development of the Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs, down through the Ages, to the
Futhark Runes and the modern day alphabet.

To facilitate understanding, and eliminate confusion, the chart follows the modern alphabet
sequence, rather than that of the Futhark Alphabet.

Step 3 in deciphering the Secret Meaning of the Futhark Runes
The Precession of the Equinoxes
The number of runes correlate to the 24 hours in a day. Each is separate, yet together they
combine to constitute a whole, a completeness, an absolute. In terms of an Earth-centred
universe the Sun rises, sets and rises again. It appears to arc its way across the heavens
during the daylight hours and journeys through the Underworld at night. On its one day
passage it scribes a circle, and then begins the process all over again. This is referred to as a
Cycle of Time.

Twice a year, during the
Spring and Autumn Equinoxes, the hours of night and day are
rendered equal with
exactly 12 hours each. It was for this reason that these two days were
venerated by the peoples of the past.

Furthermore, it was because
the number 12 was sacred, that there are 24 (2 x12) hours in a
day, and not 11 or 19 or 23, for example.

The Sacred Meaning of Number Twelve

The sacred meaning of the number twelve relates to the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac. Most of us
will be familiar with the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac. It is reasonable to suspect that most of you
reading this will be familiar with the Sign of the Zodiac under which you were born, and many
of you will read your stars in newspapers and magazines everyday. You might be an Aries, a
Libra or a Scorpio.

The apparent movement of the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac across the sky does not only take
place on an annual basis however. The cycle also occurs over a period of 25,920 years, often
referred to as Plato’s Great Year.

The following diagram can be interpreted on both of these levels, but the main emphasis is on
the Great Year …
the Four Seasons, the Twelve Ages and the Precession of the Equinoxes.
The twelve markers indicating the timing of the Sun entering a New Age and / or Season of the
Zodiac are like "flags" denoting the boundaries. In fact they could be considered as
"flagships" heralding in each of the New Ages and / or Seasons.

The ensigns of the
twelve Zodiacal Constellations, representing the Twelve Ages in the
Precession of the Equinoxes
, appear to arch their way across the sky as if in royal procession.
The beginning of a new Zodiacal Season is marked by the standards of the Lion, the Bull, the
Man and the Eagle … sometimes equated with the Four Cardinal Directions. The Fifth Cardinal
Direction is the central point of revolution, the pole of the ecliptic.
The Royal Arch of the Ages of the Zodiac.
The ensigns of the twelve Zodiacal Constellations, representing
the Twelve Ages in the Precession of the Equinoxes,

Taking this idea of Astronomy a step further, some of the Futhark Runes
can be shown to be connected with Constellations,
as well as the Sun.
meaning, of the Futhark Alphabet.

Step One
Tyr's Aett is the First Aett, Hagall's Aett is the Second Aett and Frey's Aett is the Third Aett.
See "The Futhark Alphabet".

The
First Aett begins with the word "Odin", the Father of the Gods.
The
Second Aett begins with Sowilo, the Sun.
The
Third Aett begins with Wunjo, the Standard of the gods.

Step Two
The symbols and letter sounds of the Runic Alphabet were inherited from the Ancient Egyptian
Hieroglyphs, via Proto Sinaitic Hieroglyphs, Phoenician Script and Archaic Greek.

Step Three
The first of the Sacred Meanings encoded into the Futhark Alphabet is that of the Precession
of the Equinoxes. This indicated that
Astronomy is an important factor  to be considered in
deciphering the secret meaning of the Futhark alphabet.

"Fehu", meaning "cattle", represents the Constellation of Taurus complete with the
Bull's Horns.

"Gebo" symbolized the goddess Gefn, also known as Freyr. Being Mistress of the Gods
she represented the
Constellation of Virgo.

"Ehwaz" translates as "horse" and as such can be interpreted as representing the
"Mannaz" translates as "men" and can be interpreted as two identical men facing each
other. As such this rune would represent the
Constellation of Gemini, the Twins.

"Dagaz", although translating as "Day", began its life as the symbol of a Fish. It can
therefore be argued that this rune represents the
Constellation of Pisces.

"Thurisaz" symbolises the God Thor and represents the Constellation of Orion.
"Thurisaz" means "Giant" and the Constellation of Orion is referred to as "The Giant".
Also Orion holds a Club (Thor's Hammer) in his right hand. Finally the shape of the rune
"Thurisaz" looks like a diminutive of the shape of the Constellation of Orion.
We have now taken the fourth step
in deciphering the Runic or secret meaning
of the Futhark Alphabet.

Step 5  in deciphering the Secret Meaning of the Futhark Runes
The Secret Meaning of the Futhark Runes

"Secret Meanings" ... the word "Rune"
being derived from "Run" (pronounced
roon), an Anglo-Saxon word meaning
"Secret" or "Mystery".
The second of the Sacred Meanings
encoded into the Futhark Alphabet is
that of Astronomy.

Raidho is often translated as "Chariot". Not surprisingly there is a
constellation referred to as "The Chariot" but it is more commonly
called
"The Little Dipper" or "Ursa Minor". Ursa Minor is currently the
Polar Constellation of which the Pole Star Polaris forms the tip.
Ansuz is the name given to the gods Odin and Oss and as such he is a
later version of the Ancient Egyptian god
Osiris. The constellation
which represented the soul of Osiris is the
Constellation of Orion.
Thurisaz is considered to represent the god Thor the son of Odin,
who was a later version of the Ancient Egyptian god
Osiris. (See
above) However
Thurisaz can also be considered to represent the
Ancient Egyptian god
Thoth, who is pictured to the right of the screen.
Thoth was credited with introducing the arts and sciences, including
scribe of the Gods. The Ancient Egyptian hieroglyph for
"Scribe" is
not unlike the Runic hieroglyph for
"Thurisaz". Thoth was also the
Ancient Egyptian god of the
Moon.
At this point the esoteric meaning of Kenaz becomes evident. Kenaz,
the letter K, and meaning "Knowledge" is derived from the Ancient
Egyptian hieroglyph for "Scribe". In this sense Kenaz can also be
considered as representing
Thoth in his role as Scribe. Kenaz has
already been determined as representing the
Moon.
Uruz is generally translated as "Aurochs" which is an extinct Central
European Wild Ox
. Originally however this pair of horns, shown today
in the upright position of the letter "U",  would have been the symbol
of a
Ram. The Constellation of the Ram is Aries.
Fehu translates as "Cattle". However because there are two horns on
the Runic Hieroglyph a more accurate translation is "Bull". The
Constellation of the Bull is
Taurus.
Important Background Information

a) Precession
The reason that Precession occurs is that the Earth not only rotates on its axis ... otherwise
known as Axis Mundi or World Pillar ... it also wobbles. This wobble effect is a phenomenon
caused by forces exerted by the
Sun on the bulges of the Earth at the Equator.

The wobble effect is best explained in terms of a spinning top. As the top begins to lose
momentum it begins to wobble. It is this same kind of circular movement, or wobble, of the
Earth, which moving at a constant speed over long periods of Time alters the direction of the
Polar Axis. One revolution is completed every 25,920 years. The central point of revolution is
called the "pole of the ecliptic".
To learn more about Precession
please visit my web page
"Ancient Egyptians and the Constellations"
http://ancientegypt.hypermart.net
b) The Tree of Life
In Ancient Egyptian texts it is written of the Tree of Life, "I am the plant which comes from Nu."
The Tree of Life grew out of the Sacred Mound, its branches reaching out and supporting the
star and planet studded sky, while its roots reached down into the watery abyss of the
Netherworld.

The trunk of the
Tree of Life represented the World Pillar or Axis Mundi (literally "Axis of the
Mound") around which the heavens appeared to revolve. The World Pillar was considered to
be the centre of the universe.

The Ancient Egyptian symbol for "plant" meaning "Tree of Life" was three sacred lotus lilies.
The glyph which denotes the Sacred Knowledge of Hu  is derived from the sacred lotus glyph.

The trunk of the Tree of Life represents the Axis Munde,

c) The Great Conjunction
There are twelve Zodiacal Constellations, each spanning 30 degrees of the night sky. As part
of the process of Precession these constellations appear to move their postion across the
heavens nightly, annually and every 2160 years.

Nightly you may watch them very slowly move across the sky. Annually your birth sign comes
around but once.
Every 2160 years we move into a new Age of the Zodiac.

For example, we are currently living in the Age of Pisces. Hence the "Fish" symbol for the
Christian religion. The previous Age was the Age of Aries. Hence the "Ram" symbol of the Old
Testament. Before that was the Age of Taurus. Hence the "Bull" imagery in Minoan Crete.
On December 21st 2012 we move into the Age of Aquarius.

At sunrise on that morning the
Sun will move through an Opening, Gate or Portal, out of the
Age of Pisces and into the Age of Aquarius
.

The Second Aett: Precession
Start
Here
Remember to read from right to left.
Sowilo, the Sun is the key player in the Precession of the Ages of the
Zodiac. It is the
Sun which signals a new Age of the Zodiac by moving
through an "Opening" from one Age to the next every 2160 years.
Algiz is also known as "Elhaz". In ancient times the word "El" meant "Lord".
The word "Haz" is a diminutive form of the ancient Egyptian god "Osiris".
The Lord referred to in this instance is the
Lord Osiris .  His was the earliest
recorded form of the
Tree of Life, the trunk of which represented the Axis
Mundi
around which the heavens appeared to revolve.
Peordhro or Perthro represents the "Opening" through which the Sun
moves to signal the Dawn of a New Age of the Zodiac. The word
"Perthro"
is derived from the Hebrew word
"Pharaoh", meaning "Sun".
The Hebrew word "Peor" on its own means "Opening".
Eihwaz, literally referring to a Yew Tree and thereby reminding us of the
Tree of Life
, represents the Cycle of Life and Death. The Death of the Old
Age of the Zodiac, and the
Birth of the New Age.
Jera can represent either a Year or an Era. Both are indicative of Precession.
For example, your birth sign eg Scorpio occurs once a year, while a New
Age or Era comes around every 2160 years. Jera represents the
repeated
cycles of Precession into Eternity.
Isa is a reference to Isis, the sister/wife of the Ancient Egypian god Osiris
... Algiz or Elhaz defined above as the Tree of Life and the Axis Mundi.
Clearly Isa is also an axis, but in this instance the reference is to the
Axis
connecting the Magnetic North Pole to the Central Point of Revolution
.
(See first diagram above.) The point of intersection (marriage) of these
two Axis defines the Centre of the Earth.
Nauthiz represents the marriage of Osiris and Isis (Algiz and Isa), the
intersection of the Axis Mundi with the Axis connecting the Magnetic
North Pole with the Central Point of Revolution. (See first diagram above.)
The Axis Munde points to the
Celestial North Pole Star while the Isa Axis
( my own terminology) points to the
Celestial Magnetic North Pole.
Hagalaz refers to the god and goddess Heimdall and Mordgud, the latter
guarding the
Gjoell Bridge across to Hel, the Land of the Dead. In this
connection they are a later version of Osiris and Isis. Osiris presided
over the Hall of Judgement through which the deceased had to pass in
order to reach the Land of the Dead, which was among the stars.

Hagalaz
is sometimes referred to as a Grain of Corn, which suggests the
Pole Star
was considered the Land of the Dead.
Hagalaz = Hel = Land of the Dead = Pole Star.

the central Point of Revolution. (I have termed this axis the "Isa Axis".)
Nauthiz represents the intersection of the Axis Mundi with the Isa Axis.
The Axis Mundi points to the Celestial North Pole Star,
while the Isa Axis points to the Celestial Magnetic North Pole.
Hagalaz represents the Pole Star, which at the present time is Polaris.
In 2800BC the Pole Star was Alpha Draconis ... due to Precession.

Gods and Astronomy: The Dawn of the Age of Pisces
according to the Futhark Runes

The
principle players in the Third Aett: Gods and Astronomy are VIRGO, MOON, URSA MINOR,
ORION, ARIES
and TAURUS.

Taurus
and Aries are the two Ages of the Zodiac which precede the Age of Pisces, the Fish.

Orion and Virgo represent the Ancient Egyptian gods of Osiris and his sister/wife Isis,
as well as Odin and Gefn.

The
Moon represents the Ancient Egyptian god Thoth and a nightly reminder of Precession.

Ursa Minor represents Precession: the movement of the new Polar Constellation towards the
Celestial North Pole, and eventually a new Polar Star ... Polaris.

The absence of Pisces, the Fish, among these key players would suggest that the Runic
Hieroglyphs pre-date the Age of Pisces.

However the Constellation of Pisces is to be found in the First Aett: Creation. The Runic Glyph
"Dagaz" was originally an Ancient Egyptian hieroglyph of the Abtu Fish.

Pisces appearing in the First Aett: Creation, instead of in the Third Aett: Gods and
Constellations, indicates that
the Futhark Runes are a record of the astronomical event
"The Dawn of the Age of Pisces", rather than Creation in general.
The Futhark Runes celebrate the movement of the Sun out of the Age of Aries
and into the Age of Pisces, as a result of Precession.

The Birth of the New Age: Odin/Orion being the Father
and Gefn/Virgo being the Mother.
In the beginning there was the god, Odin and his mistress Gefn.
The Seed of Life was implanted and  became fertile.
And then there was the Dawn of the Age of Pisces.
A Golden Age, with an abundance
of water, people, animals and vegetation.

As the Sun rose on a new day, on a New Age,
the god Tiwaz was placed in the sky to administer
Justice, Law and Order.
